Interested in helping to make the environment a priority in Larimer?
Contact Green Team Chair Carolyn Peeks or come to a Green Team meeting every 2nd and 4th Thursday from 6PM-8PM at the Kingsley Association.
The Larimer Green Team was founded in 2008 and since then has been behind many projects and workshops in the neighborhood. Perhaps the most visible of these has been the Community Garden located at the Village Green on Larimer Avenue. The Green Team and community gardeners, with support from countless volunteers and organizational partners especially GTech Strategies and Grow Pittsburgh, began and maintain 40 raised beds.
Since 2009 the Larimer Green Team has hosted its annual “Taste the Future of Larimer,” which doubles as a fundraiser and an event to raise awareness of the positive things happening in the neighborhood.
The Green Team has received two Love Your Block grants. From 2011 – 2012, the Larimer Green Team acted as a key participant to direct the activities of the Seeding Prosperity Across Corridors (SPARC) Partnership’s efforts to beautify the Larimer Avenue corridor. This work resulted in green job training for nine youth, the addition of 119 trees and 1,183 other plants to the corridor, design and construction of a rain garden, and maintenance of 121,400 square feet of community space.
The Green Team has partnered successfully with the Kingsley Association, the Mayor’s Civic Leadership Academy, the Office of Senator Ferlo, Penn State Extension, and Chatham University’s Food Studies Class, GTECH, the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, and Grow Pittsburgh, among others.
